COUNSELING PHILOSOPHY

The term “moxie” refers to qualities we all have the potential to develop within our hearts and minds…spunk, courage, and determination. Rae heard the term throughout her life from her mother, a native of Maine, who, indeed, demonstrated the characteristics of “moxie,” especially during her late adult and senior years. In light of this, Rae came to associate the word with the basic strength that is nestled within the human spirit. Hence, she embraced the concept of moxie as part of her personal philosophy, and the basis of her therapeutic practice.

Rae uses a multifaceted approach to therapy which includes the philosophies of: Person Centered, Gestalt, Existential, Psychodynamic, and Cognitive/Behavioral theories. She believes that individuals experience life within their social surroundings and their family relationships and encourages the exploration of these factors during therapy sessions.

Throughout Rae’s years of working as a nurse and therapist, she has been committed to supporting each person during their journey to secure and maintain their ultimate state of self-esteem and independence. She believes that the counseling relationship is based on respect and the understanding that each person has the potential to achieve a sense of peace, independence, and self-determination.

As a registered nurse and mental health therapist, Rae firmly believes in a holistic approach to counseling. She is committed to providing intervention which incorporates all aspects of an individual’s being: emotional, intellectual, physical, spiritual, and social. She encourages her clients to explore all areas of their lives during their counseling process. Rae also recognizes and teaches that all events and information from our histories contribute to our adult perspectives. Although these perspectives create the frame of our window to the world, we are free to refocus and redirect our view if it does not serve our best interests.

Rae strives to include all her knowledge and instincts throughout her counseling practice. Within this philosophy, she encourages her clients to do the same. She believes that each client entering into a counseling relationship has the secret to their own healing. As a therapist, she provides support and guidance along the path of healing.

FOCUS AND TECHNIQUES OF PRACTICE

Rae works with adults on personal and spiritual growth through the traditional therapeutic interventions of talk therapy, art work, journaling, and poetry. She also offers the unique process of energy balancing for those clients who are interested. In addition to providing energy balancing treatments, her work involves education regarding chakras, energy fields, and self-treatment. Her approach includes techniques from: Therapeutic Touch, Reiki, and Healing Touch.

Although Rae does not provide hypnotherapy, she uses the background knowledge and education as a means of assisting clients through guided imagery and relaxation to help manage their anxiety and depression. Following her philosophy of self-empowerment, she teaches these techniques to her clients with the anticipation that they’ll be able to incorporate the tools into their daily lives.

As a therapist with a nursing background, Rae encourages her clients to pursue optimum physical health through exploring realistic and personalized diet, rest and exercise regimes. She also supports her clients during their interactions with their health care provider(s).
